How You Can Support Torontonians This Holiday Season

Happy Hannukah (day 2!) to my fellow Jews, and here’s to hoping everyone else is getting their holiday shopping done, or started at the very least.

Though I have a generic gift guide on the way as well, I wanted to dedicate an entire post to Toronto-based small businesses which offer products that can easily be gifted this holiday season. Having a few friends who started their own businesses, as well as having this blog for the past two years, I know how difficult it is to reach out to your friends and ask for help and support – let’s put it this way, I can count on one hand how many of my friends are subscribed to my blog. That’s why this holiday season I think it’s soooo important to support your loved ones as well as those in your community.

So without further ado, here are 8 businesses you can support right here in homely Toronto this season:

Sabina Fenn, a Ryerson graduate, illustrator, and perfectionist, this girl’s talent is unbelievable. I actually begged her to release holiday cards just so I could buy them myself. Not only does she have these adorable cards available in her shop, but she has an array of prints that would light up any fashionista’s home. The coolest part of her business? You can order a custom illustration, and surprise your friends with their own fashion portrait.

Considering most of us live slightly chaotic lifestyles, it’s important to tone it down a notch and get grounded as much as possible. Gemstones and crystals are a great way to add some energy and good vibes to your life, and this Markham-grown business has a great selection of bracelets to choose from. Perfect for a stocking stuffer or 8 days of Hanukkah!

I came across the Content Planner on Instagram, thought it was a phenomenal product, and then realized it is actually born and grown in Toronto by Insta-blogger, Kat Gaskin. Unlike any other day planner or agenda, the Content Planner is designed to plan social media posts across all channels, with tools built to plan out every detail, from hashtags to timing to holidays. A great gift idea for the social media manager, blogger, or business-owner in your life.

This brand was introduced to me via Direct Message on Instagram when I asked my followers for suggestions of businesses to include in my blog post. After perusing the website for a total of 5 seconds, I was already in love: original illustrations placed on silk scarves and pocket squares to make amazing gifts for those who like wearing something, classy, original, and high-quality. With so many choices of scarf size and illustration, you’re bound to find something for someone lucky on your list.

Let’s be real, who doesn’t love candles?! From bath bombs to beard oil, you can find homemade beauty products for anyone on your list at Loved and Beyond.

The Better Life Project, run by two local entrepreneurs, is a business built around helping other people pursue their goals and dreams with the right tools. Their product, the Better Life Planner, is a daily planner created with goal setting and getting in mind. Additionally, they’re currently doing a giveaway until December 21st, so you might even be able to win a planner and cross off that holiday shopping list even quicker!

Another account shared with me through Instagram Direct, Sweet Creations by Vanessa, is a sweet tooth’s dream. Scrolling through her Instagram page and Etsy site literally makes me want to throw a party just so I can order customized cookies and impress all my guests. This is a perfect way to add something onto gifts that will make them personalized and unique.

Last but not least, Pombons are a great stocking stuffer, Hannukah day 4 (or 5, or 6) gift, or something to give to those friends you’re not quite close enough with to spend more than $50 on. One of my biggest regrets of 2017? Not wearing my Pombons more often (that I’ve had since March). Check them out here, as well as the business-owner’s shoe blog, Shoe Tease.

Toronto is a great city, one that is always growing. With a culture as diverse and rich as ours, it’s no wonder we have so many incredible local businesses in the area. Make sure to think twice when choosing your holiday presents this season, because that same $100 you’d have spent at the mall could make a difference for someone’s business for 2018!
